There’s something special about fall in Roxborough. The cooler temperatures, changing leaves, neighborhood festivals, local restaurants and easy access to some of Philadelphia’s best outdoor spaces make this one of the best times of year to explore Northwest Philly.
Whether you’re a longtime Roxborough resident, new to the neighborhood, or thinking about making the move, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the season. From hiking through the Wissahickon to grabbing dinner on Main Street in Manayunk, here are some of the best things to do in and around Roxborough this fall.
If there’s one place you should experience in Roxborough during the fall, it’s Wissahickon Valley Park.
The changing leaves transform the Wissahickon into one of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Philadelphia. Forbidden Drive is a particularly popular option for an easy fall walk, bike ride or dog-friendly outing. The wide trail follows Wissahickon Creek and provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy the foliage.
For a little more adventure, explore some of the park's wooded trails, visit Kelpius Cave, or make your way toward the historic Thomas Mill Covered Bridge.
The Wissahickon includes hundreds of acres of wooded parkland and more than 50 miles of trails, making it easy to find a new route even if you've visited many times before.
One of Roxborough's biggest fall traditions is Roxtoberfest, and the 2026 celebration is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from noon to 6 p.m.
The festival takes over Ridge Avenue with live music, food trucks, local restaurants and breweries, vendors, children's activities and plenty of Oktoberfest-inspired fun. This year's event will feature more than 100 vendors and is free to attend.
It's the perfect example of what makes Roxborough special: a big-city neighborhood with a genuine community feel.
Fall is also a great excuse to spend an afternoon exploring the businesses along Ridge Avenue.
Grab a coffee, browse local shops, stop for lunch or dinner, and check out some of the neighborhood's independent businesses. Roxborough's commercial corridor has everything from restaurants and breweries to boutiques and cafes.
For visitors who haven't spent much time in the neighborhood, Ridge Avenue is a great place to start. Visit Philadelphia highlights local favorites including White Yak, New Ridge Brewing Co., Eremita Cafe and Poppy & Bean.
Just down the hill from Roxborough is Manayunk, making it incredibly easy to combine a Roxborough outing with a trip to the river.
The Manayunk Canal Towpath is a relatively flat, scenic option for walking, running and biking. In the fall, the combination of the canal, trees and historic industrial buildings makes for a particularly nice afternoon outing.
After your walk, head up to Main Street for dinner, drinks, shopping or dessert.
Manayunk Canal is also connected to the larger Schuylkill River Trail network, so you can make your outing as short or as long as you'd like.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, Manayunk will host its Fall Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event will feature local vendors and artisans, seasonal food, live music, family activities, a pop-up pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating. There's also a Mac n' Cheese Crawl, with 18 Manayunk restaurants participating.
It's a great option for families, couples or anyone looking for a classic fall Saturday without having to leave Northwest Philadelphia.
Fall is arguably the best season for exploring the Schuylkill River.
Head toward East Falls and connect with the Schuylkill River Trail, or continue toward Kelly Drive and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Schuylkill River Trail offers an easy way to get outside while enjoying the changing scenery along the river. For cyclists and runners, it's also a great way to work some exercise into a fall weekend.
For something a little quieter, check out the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Upper Roxborough.
Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education sits on a large nature preserve and offers opportunities for hiking, nature observation and enjoying the changing seasons.
It's especially appealing if you want to experience the outdoors without driving outside the city. The center specifically highlights fall foliage as one of its seasonal attractions.
Roxborough's location gives residents easy access to both the Wissahickon and Fairmount Park.
Head toward Fairmount Park for a fall picnic, hike or scenic drive. Belmont Plateau is another great option if you're looking for an expansive view of the Philadelphia skyline surrounded by autumn scenery.
Belmont Plateau is especially popular for its elevated views and access to surrounding trails. We also love the Manayunk Heritage trail for a sunset!
One of the best things about living in Roxborough is that you don't necessarily need to plan a complicated day trip to enjoy the season.
You can start your morning with a coffee on Ridge Avenue, spend a few hours hiking in the Wissahickon, walk or bike through Manayunk, grab lunch on Main Street and finish the evening with dinner or drinks nearby.
Roxborough and Manayunk are closely connected, combining neighborhood restaurants, shops, trails, parks and riverfront recreation in a relatively small area.
If you're willing to venture a little farther from Roxborough, Greater Philadelphia has plenty of traditional fall activities, including pumpkin patches, corn mazes, apple festivals, hayrides and harvest events.
Places throughout the Philadelphia suburbs offer classic fall experiences, making it easy to turn a Saturday into a quick day trip without traveling too far.
Fall really highlights what makes Roxborough one of Philadelphia's unique neighborhoods.
You get the convenience of being in Philadelphia while still having immediate access to wooded trails, parks, the Wissahickon, the Schuylkill River and nearby Manayunk. Add in local restaurants, independent businesses and community events like Roxtoberfest, and there's plenty to do without heading into Center City.
Whether you're hiking through the Wissahickon, grabbing a drink on Ridge Avenue, watching the leaves change along the river or enjoying a neighborhood festival, fall is a great time to get out and experience Roxborough.
